Dear Christian Right: You Are Soooo Wrong And NOT Persecuted

For some strange reason, many Christians seem to think they are being persecuted in this country. In a Public Religion Research Institute survey, 74 percent of Republicans and 77 percent of supporters of Donald Trump (R-N.Y.) say that Christian persecution is a major problem in this country.

The Religious Right seems to be in its own little bubble. They talk about “religious freedom bills,” but those bills are a sneaky way to allow them to discriminate against people as long as they cite their religious beliefs. They think they have the right to discriminate.

Many Evangelicals believe that they are being treated worse than minority groups. They think that their rights and beliefs are being taken away, but they are not.

Christians are being persecuted in many other countries, true, but not in ours.

According to a World Watch List survey, North Korea is the country that persecutes Christians the most. The United States didn’t even make the top 50.

Recently, we had a major controversy over transgender people and bathrooms. North Carolina passed the hateful “HB2” law that forces transgender people to use the bathroom that corresponds to their birth gender. They are not allowed to use the bathroom that corresponds to the gender they identify with now.

The Religious Right made the excuse that transgender people are going to sexually abuse women and children. There is not a single documented case of this.

The Religious Right cites religious beliefs when they protest against transgender people.

One business owner actually erected an outhouse to discriminate against transgender people in his hardware store. Freedom for you shouldn’t include taking away freedoms from someone else.

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act was passed in 1993. The bill has been used to allow Christians to take away other people’s rights. Hobby Lobby used this law to deny contraception to their employees. They claimed that it is because of their religious beliefs. The ACLU said:

“This is a deeply troubling decision. For the first time, the highest court in the country has said that business owners can use their religious beliefs to deny their employees a benefit that they are guaranteed by law.”

I respect your right to have your religious beliefs. If you don’t like LGBT people, just don’t hang out with them. Stop using your religion to pretend you are being victimized.  You are not being persecuted, but are persecuting others for not being Christian.

Stop using your religion to justify your hate for other people.

Here is another atheist’s opinion on the subject:
