Bigoted Business Owner Creates Hateful ‘Transgender Bathroom’

After the SCOTUS marriage equality ruling, Jeff Amyx, owner of Amyx Hardware and Roofing Supplies in Washburn, Tennessee, put up a sign saying “No Gays Allowed.” He had this to say about the decision:

“They gladly stand for what they believe in, why can’t I? They believe their way is right, I believe it’s wrong. But yet I’m going to take more persecution than them because I’m standing for what I believe in.”

The Yellow Pages site for the store was filled with one-star reviews and sarcastic comments. My favorite was:

“Tried ordering saloon doors for a remodel job. Owner said he didn’t sell doors that swung both ways.”

Now, he is reacting to Obama’s guidance for schools. The president recently sent out a letter to every school district telling them to allow transgender students to use the bathroom they want to. Mr. Amyx reacted by erecting an outhouse outside of his store. That is his transgender bathroom apparently.

He thinks he is making some great stand against Obama and transgender people. Being a bigoted a-hole is not noble. This is what he had to say about it:

“We still have freedom of speech in this country. Obama is trying to push this down everybody’s throat. But I just want the world to know — everybody to know — that you don’t have to accept it. They can enforce all the laws they want but getting us to comply with it is going to be a different story.”

I present to you the outhouse in all of its bigoted glory:

Amyx misunderstood the president’s order, though. The letter said that transgender students should not be forced to use special bathrooms just like the one pictured. The students shouldn’t be singled out and embarrassed just for going to the bathroom. Amyx even has hats that say “No Gays Allowed.” You can see this and all of his bigoted tweets on his Twitter feed.

This is an interesting video about discrimination by The Young Turks. It shows his “No Gays Allowed” sign and talks about how this is actually still legal.
