Breitbart Thinks This Trump Plan Isn’t Cruel Enough (TWEET/AUDIO)

Just before the close of business on Friday, Donald Trump rolled out his proposal to reform our immigration system. Almost no one likes it. Pro-immigration activists, liberals, and Democrats think it’s too heavy-handed, partly because it would dramatically reduce immigration quotas and make it far more difficult for families to be reunited. Meanwhile, most conservatives are up in arms over plans to protect nearly the double the “Dreamers” who were protected in the Obama era.

Among those who think this immigration plan isn’t heavy-handed enough is an outfit that is usually among Trump’s loudest cheerleaders–Breitbart News. A visit to Breitbart this weekend saw headlines that we don’t normally see from a site that has become so rabidly pro-Trump that it’s sometimes called “Trumpbart.”

It continued on “Breitbart News Saturday.” Breitbart’s Washington political editor, Matthew Boyle, brought on Rosemary Jenks of NumbersUSA, best known as the outfit behind the immigration scorecard that has become a staple of Republican presidential campaigns. Listen here.

Boyle mused that Trump had “snatched defeat from the jaws of victory” in the shutdown battle, musing that Trump’s plan was a “strategic retreat.” Jenks agreed, claiming that Trump had “cut the legs” off the House GOP with a plan that the Democrats probably won’t support. She believed that if Trump wants a deal, any concessions will almost certainly “go further to the left.”

Boyle mused that the expansion of protections for Dreamers amounts to amnesty, and ends E-Verify. Jenks claimed that the proposal would bring in people who were already on the visa waiting list. She also claimed that more people would pour into the country and overstay their visas, and would also result in more people claiming amnesty.

Boyle believed there are two ways to stop “this awful plan”–either Republicans grow a set, or Trump walks away from the deal. But he thought Trump needed a little push.

“Is there a chance for the American people, if their voices are heard loud and clear right now, to stand up, fight this, stop it and for President Trump to move back in the correct direction and get back to being the solid negotiator and winner that he was—that he proved himself to be on the campaign trail? Right now, he’s kind of becoming a little bit of a loser. How does he get back to being a winner?”

Jenks thought Boyle was on to something–Trump needed to “walk away” from the deal, and wait until the Dreamer permits start expiring on March 5. She believed that the Republicans need to go back to a tougher plan proposed by Congressman Bob Goodlatte, and hand it to the Democrats on a “take it or leave it” basis. After all, “elections should have consequences.”

Apparently Boyle and Jenks forget that the American people expect the president to govern. And that means a president should negotiate, not dictate. If Trump takes their advice, then he really is going to find out elections have consequences.
