Trump: Better A Suspected Perv Than A ‘Liberal Person’ In The Senate (VIDEOS/TWEETS)

In the last few days, anecdotal evidence has piled up that former Alabama chief justice Roy Moore had molested girls and women and pursued girls young enough to be his daughter. As that evidence has emerged, we have seen more and more parallels with the Bill Cosby scandal. Far too many women have come forward with detailed accounts dating back several years for their allegations to be credibly dismissed.

In the face of this, the White House took a rather curious line–whether Moore had any business in the former Senate seat of Jeff Sessions was a matter for the people of Alabama. But that line seemingly changed on Monday morning, when White House information minister Kellyanne Conway hinted that if Alabamians wanted tax reform, they’d better vote for Moore–and the allegations against him be hanged. The obvious question–was Conway speaking for herself, or was she speaking for the White House?

Well, the man who occupies the White House cleared up that matter on Tuesday afternoon. He offered a full-throated defense of Moore, and warned Alabamians against putting a liberal in Sessions’ seat.

Donald Trump left Washington on Tuesday afternoon for a planned five-day stay at Mar-a-Lago. Watch him heading out here, via C-SPAN.

As Trump headed to the plane with Melania and Barron, reporters asked him if he wanted to speak about Moore. The response was vintage Trump.

“I can tell you one thing for sure. We don’t need a liberal person in there, a Democrat, Jones. I can tell you for a fact we do not need somebody who’s going to be bad on crime, bad on borders, bad for the military, bad for the Second Amendment.”

Really, Mr. Trump? So we don’t need the Democrat in the race, Doug Jones, in the Senate, because he’s a “liberal person.” But we do need a guy whom at least nine women accuse of either molesting them or improperly pursuing them?

If that wasn’t enough, Trump claimed that the accusations against Moore are bogus–because Moore says they’re bogus.

“Well, he denies it. Look, he denies it. If you look what is really going on, if you look at all the things that have happened over the last 48 hours, he totally denies it. He says it didn’t happen. And look, you have to listen to him also. He said 40 years ago this did not happen.”

We have listened to him, Mr. Trump. We have listened to him offer a “defense” that is little more than “(noun) (verb) FAKE NEWS!” That is not, and never will be, an adequate response to such serious charges. And we listened to him, through his lawyers, claim that one of the accusers lied about not having contact with him during a divorce proceeding–only to have court records confirm that there was indeed no contact. Pressed further, Trump said that Moore “totally denies” the accusations.

When CNN political director David Chalian saw this, he said what anyone who watched Trump’s spiel should have concluded–Trump has officially endorsed Moore. Watch here.

Chalian noted that Trump was heading to Mar-a-Lago just as Moore’s legal team held a fiery press conference to double down on the “FAKE NEWS!” angle. He noted that a Moore lawyer referenced Conway’s Monday remarks and took that as a sign that she was indeed speaking for the White House. He also noted that Trump was essentially echoing Conway’s Monday remarks by saying that he didn’t want a Democrat to win.

Needless to say, the Twitterverse was not amused.

In hindsight, though, we should have seen this coming. Earlier on Tuesday, White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo that it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the White House would want Moore to win. Watch here.

Mulvaney told Bartiromo that it shouldn’t surprise anyone that “a Republican administration is going to want someone in the Senate who is going to vote for a Republican agenda.” He also wondered why it was getting so much attention in the press.

Okay, Mick. Let me explain it to you in terms you can understand. When there is mounting evidence that a candidate, regardless of party, has engaged in depraved and debauched conduct, we shouldn’t give a damn for whether that candidate will go along with the White House’s agenda. We should ask whether the person chosen for that seat will either bring honor to their state and the nation, or shame and disgrace.

No cause is so important that basic decency should be thrown out the window in order to further it. If Mulvaney believes that such things as protecting children and respect for women are trumped (yes, the pun was intended) by the need to “make America great again,” then it says a lot about you–and the White House in which he serves.

It cannot be stated enough. This administration is so determined to keep a liberal Democrat out of Sessions’ seat that it doesn’t give a damn about appearing to lend the White House’s stamp of approval to a man who, based on all available evidence, is a depraved and debauched jerk. Conway and Mulvaney merely hinted at it, and now Trump has put it beyond all doubt. Even without Trump’s own sordid history with women, this is outrageous. This is unacceptable. And it is grounds to demand that Trump resign, and resign immediately.

If this so-called president and so-called man has anything left in him, he will stay in Mar-a-Lago when his vacation is due to end on Tuesday. When a president believes that basic decency should be thrown out the window in order to push through his agenda, it is time for that president to go–now.
