When word got out that Donald Trump was willing to make a deal on protecting Dreamers, right-wing heads exploded across the country. A lot of “Make America Great Again” hats got caught in the shrapnel; social media lit up with angry Trump diehards burning their MAGA hats in protest.
The folks at People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch stumbled on something that may have helped stir up that outrage. One of the right-wing fringe’s loudest voices thinks that if Trump does go soft on immigration, it may be time to call out death squads.
Around the time the MAGA hats started burning, Ann Coulter dropped by Todd Starnes’ show on Fox News Radio to discuss what she saw as the Trump administration’s shortcomings over the last eight months. Right Wing Watch got a clip.
When Starnes asked Coulter what upset her the most about the Trump administration, she slammed his “open, defiant breaking of his most central promises.” She accused Trump of ignoring what she believed was a loud and clear demand from voters across the spectrum.
“We have made as clear as you can possibly make it–we want less immigration. Stop dumping the Third World on the country.”
She then recalled that three attempts at passing immigration amnesty have been derailed when “the American people” got wind of it and bombarded the Capitol switchboard with demands to take it off the floor.
Coulter believes that Trump’s hardline stance on immigration during the campaign was what won him the Rust Belt–and Trump seems to be forgetting that. She believes that if Trump continues to go soft on immigration, the right will have three options. The first is absolutely chilling.
“There’s the organizing the death squads for the people who ruined America, because there will be no more hope.”
I hope I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying, Ann. Are you calling for people to take matters into their own hands? Anyone with roots in Central America hearing this spiel probably had a chill go down their spine, because it probably brought back memories of the death squads that ran rough shod there in the 1980s.
It turns out that Coulter made a similar call at the 2014 Conservative Political Action Conference. Right Wing Watch got a clip.
Coulter delivered a stark warning to the GOP–if it passes any sort of amnesty, “we organize the death squads for the people who ruined America.”
So twice in a four-year span, in both cases while essentially preaching to the choir. It’s going to be awfully hard for Coulter to fob this off as just a slip of the tongue.
