If you were wondering how long it would take before former White House aide Steve Bannon got around to stabbing his former boss in the back, the answer is not long at all.
During an interview with Charlie Rose of 60 Minutes which was broadcast Sunday evening, Bannon, who has returned to his old position as the head of the right-wing web site Breitbart, said President Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey might be the “biggest mistake” in modern political history. He added:
“I don’t think there’s any doubt that if James Comey had not been fired, we would not have a special counsel. We would not have the Mueller investigation and the breadth that clearly Mr. Mueller is going for.”
Bannon also lashed out at Republican leaders and the “pearl-clutching mainstream media” he accused of “trying to nullify the 2016 election. Of Congressional Republicans, Bannon commented:
“They’re not gonna help you unless they’re put on notice. They’re gonna be held accountable if they do not support the president of the United States. Right now, there’s no accountability.”
Asked about Trump’s decision to eliminate protections for young, undocumented immigrants under the DACA program, Bannon had this to say:
“America was built on her citizens … This country’s gonna be greater, more united, more powerful than it’s ever been …This is not astrophysics, ok? And by the way, that’s every nationality, every race, every religion, every sexual preference. As long as you’re a citizen of our country. As long as you’re an American citizen, you’re part of this populist, economic nationalist movement.”
While Bannon may now be able to say and do whatever he wants to without causing political consequences for the White House, his power is also greatly reduced because he no longer has unfettered access to the president. That alone must have the former adviser seething and eager to exact revenge on those who help engineer his ouster from the West Wing. Also, it’s safe to say that Bannon will be subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury as Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation continues.
