In the aftermath of Charlottesville, a debate began as to whether or not monuments and statues celebrating the defeated Confederacy should be removed in the Southern states where they’re so prevalent. Those who support keeping the memorials say they represent history and heritage while those who oppose such displays argue they only reinforce racism and white privilege.
One of the states currently in the spotlight is Georgia, where Jason Spencer, a Republican member of the state legislature, recently posted a selfie on Facebook that he took at a monument in South Georgia to Confederate president Jefferson Davis. Spencer added this note with the photo:
“This is Georgia’s history.”
But when former state legislator LaDawn Jones questioned whether or not state tax dollars should continue to help pay for the upkeep of the memorial, Spencer decided to begin issuing threats against Jones, writing on social media:
“Continue your quixotic journey into South Georgia and it will not be pleasant. The truth. Not a warning. Those folks won’t put up with it like they do in Atlanta.
“I can guarantee you won’t be met with torches but something a lot more definitive.”
Spencer even went so far as to issue what sounds like a death threat if people from Atlanta (where Jones lives) travel to the Davis memorial and dare to say it needs to be removed:
“They will go missing in the Okefenokee [Swamp]. Too many necks they are red around here. Don’t say I didn’t warn you about ’em.”
Rather than be intimidated and back down, Jones fired right back at Spencer:
“Sounds like a threat of physical violence … is that what we are doing now?. Desperate times call for desperate measures huh? Afraid of what is going to happen in southern GA? I saw those white supremacists crying when shit really hit the fan.”
Looks like Spencer just got his ass handed to him by a brave lady who doesn’t take any crap from bigoted rednecks.
