GOP Congressman Using Budget Trick To Kill Funding For Trump-Russia Investigation

As Robert Mueller’s investigation into the matter of whether or not members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during the 2016 election gains steam, one Republican in the House is already working behind the scenes to try and kill all federal funding for the probe.

Florida Congressman Ron DeSantis has crafted an amendment to upcoming budget legislation which would cut off funding for Mueller’s probe six months after the amendment’s passage. Additionally, the amendment would prohibit Mueller from investigating matters that occurred before June 2015, when Trump launched his presidential campaign.

The amendment is one of hundreds filed as attachments to the government spending package the House is expected to consider when it returns from its August recess next week.

In a statement, DeSantis said he felt his amendment was necessary because the order creating the Russia probe “didn’t identify a crime to be investigated and practically invites a fishing expedition.” He added:

“Congress should use its spending power to clarify the scope and limit the duration of this investigation.”

The DeSantis amendment is not guaranteed to receive a vote by the House. The House Rules Committee has tremendous leeway to eliminate all amendments it considers to be out of order.

It should be noted that DeSantis and the majority of his GOP colleagues in both the House and Senate had no problem holding costly, unlimited hearings on Benghazi, yet now seek to shut down the Mueller investigation before it even issues a report.

House Speaker Paul Ryan would appear to be opposed to the move by DeSantis. In June, Ryan said:

“I think the best advice is to let Robert Mueller do his job.”

If DeSantis and the White House are so opposed to the Mueller probe, it makes you wonder what they’re trying to hide.
