Back when he was seeking the White House, President Trump was always droning on and on about how he was going to build a giant wall on the border and make Mexico pay for it. But now that he realizes there’s no way in hell Mexico will ever agree to something that ludicrous, he’s changed his tune and decided American taxpayers will have to foot the bill.
At Thursday’s daily press briefing, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked a very logical question. So it should come as no surprise that she didn’t have a reasonable answer.
Specifically, Sanders was asked by ABC reporter Jonathan Karl wanted to know: Since Trump repeatedly promised that Mexico would pay for his wall:
“Why is he now threatening a government shutdown if Congress won’t pay for it?”
Sanders replied:
“He campaigned on the wall. He won on talking about building a wall. And he’s going to make sure that that gets done and he’ll continue to fight for that funding and ensure that it takes place.”
Notice how she avoided the part about why Mexico won’t be paying, the way Trump promised millions of times?
Then April Ryan of American Urban Radio Networks noted:
“If there is a government shutdown, people could be laid off for a moment or some people could lose their jobs.”
And again, Sanders failed to answer a simple question:
“I’m not going to get into the weeds on that. But I know that the president is probably one of the strongest presidents we’ve had on economic issues. there’s a reason that over 1 million jobs have been created since he took office.”
But all of those jobs were created under the economic growth created by Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama. We haven’t even found out if Trump can get a budget and debt ceiling increase through Congress. However, one thing seems clear: Con Man Don just engaged in one hell of a bait and switch on the suckers who cast their ballots for him. And they can expect lots more of that in the days ahead.
