Russian Foreign Minister Says Trump Jr. Uproar Is ‘A Mountain Out Of A Molehill’

As a general rule of thumb, when you’re suspected of colluding with a hostile foreign government–for example, Russia–it’s usually not a good thing when a top official of that foreign government comes to your defense. But that’s exactly what happened to Donald Trump Jr. and the White House when Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rushed to Trump Jr’s defense during a visit to Brussels.

Asked about the uproar caused by Donald Jr. meeting with Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya, Lavrov commented:

“I learned with surprise that a Russian lawyer, a women, is being blamed and Trump’s son is being blamed for meeting. For me, this is wild. Because when any person speaks to a lawyer, what problem or threat could be there? I didn’t know about this, I learned about it from television.”

Guess that means that if a high Russian official met with an American lawyer investigating the many illegal activities of Vladimir Putin, the Russian president wouldn’t have that person executed before sundown.

Lavrov, using the Donald Trump playbook, also attacked the media for reporting the story:

“It is amazing how serious people can make a mountain out of a molehill, so to speak. Maybe there is no molehill there.”

Isn’t it true that what you often find in a molehill is a mole? Was Donald Trump Jr. working as a mole for Russian intelligence in exchange for the Russians doing everything possible to assure his daddy won the presidential election? That would certainly qualify as one hell of a mountain.

If President Trump truly wants to prove he isn’t under the control of Vladimir Putin, here’s what he can do: Announce that Russia did indeed interfere in the 2016 election and immediately sign the new package of sanctions Congress passed. He could also volunteer to appear before the House and Senate Intelligence Committees. Oh, and he could call Special Counsel Robert Mueller and guarantee his full cooperation with the investigation.

But it’s more likely that pigs will start flying with unicorns as their co-pilots.
