On Tuesday, the Delaware legislature voted to approve a bill that guarantees abortion rights in direct defiance of President Donald Trump. President Donald Trump has said before that he wants to overturn the landmark Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade, that makes abortion legal.
This bill makes Delaware the first state to guarantee abortion access since Trump became president. The House passed it this week, and it had already passed in the state Senate. The governor has not signed it yet; however, he is in favor of abortion rights. His spokeswoman, Jessica Borcky, said:
“But the governor supports the rights and protections afforded women under Roe v. Wade.”
Abortion opponents, aka pro-lifers, are saying that this will make Delaware a “late-term abortion haven.” Yes, because every woman is having late-term abortions all the time. Over 90 -percent of abortions are done in the first trimester.
Delaware Right to Life spokeswoman Moira Sheridan said:
“We will exert the same pressure upon Governor Carney, a Catholic, to uphold the sanctity of life for those innocent unborn children whose lives depend upon his vetoing this radical bill.”
Many pro-life groups are freaking out about this bill. Christian Headlines reports:
“Delaware gave pro-abortion advocates a rare but big win last week when Gov. John Carney signed a bill making it legal to kill unborn babies through all nine months of pregnancy.”
“Proponents of the bill drafted it out of fear the Supreme Court might someday overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.”
The Christian Post had the following headline:
“Delaware Takes Extreme Abortion Path: Killing Unborn Babies Up To Full Term Legalized, Removing All Restrictions”
They reported that it removes all abortion restrictions. But it only allows abortions until the fetus is viable, which is 24 weeks gestation. Abortions may only be performed after viability if the mother’s life is in danger. So, it is not an abortion free-for-all as they are making it out to be.
