Religious Right Snowflake Thinks We’re On ‘Devil’s Team’ For Calling Out Death Threats (VIDEO)

When you listen to religious right radio shows and podcasts, you expect to hear outrageous and jaw-dropping commentary. But what Dave Daubenmire did on his daily podcast, “Pass the Salt,” is staggering even by those standards. In case you missed it, his guest that day, fellow religious right podcast host Sheila Zilinsky, called for California Governor Jerry Brown to be publicly hanged for stating that he would do what he could at the state level to honor the provisions of the Paris climate accords. Daubenmire’s response? “Amen.”

As outrageous as it was by itself, it came within mere minutes of a Republican baseball team batting practice in Alexandria, Virginia being turned into a shooting gallery. Well, apparently the criticism must have gotten to Daubenmire. He actually thinks that those who called him out are in league with the devil.

Daubenmire led off Thursday’s podcast by taking a swipe at People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch, who originally flagged his disgusting exchange with Zilinsky. Watch a clip here.

Daubenmire told his followers that the post, originally written by Right Wing Watch’s Kyle Mantyla, was a textbook case of “how the serpent operates.” Calling Mantyla a “sissy man,” a “lying serpent,” and a “snake,” Daubenmire dared Mantyla to write a post saying that he’d called Right Wing Watch part of “the devil’s team”–because he and his employers at PFAW are indeed working for the devil.

“You are of your father, the devil, dude. And the works of your father, you will do. He was a liar from the beginning. That’s what the scripture says, Kyle–a liar from the beginning. He doesn’t just tell lies, he is a liar. And, Kyle, you are his son. You are his son.”

He then repeated what has become the standard response from a wingnut who has been called out–it was taken out of context. He said–with a straight face–that Zilinsky wasn’t really calling for Brown to be lynched. Supposedly, Zilinsky was making a “tongue-in-cheek” reference to the days of frontier justice. While he himself didn’t care, he went full snowflake when he slammed Mantyla for calling out Zillinsky, accusing him of “picking on a woman.”

For the record, I repeat what Zilinsky said, in full.

“And then you got these Logan Act treasonous hucksters–Jerry Brown from California, ‘Oh, I’m gonna sign the Paris.’ I mean, this guy should be hanging from a rope from the town square.”

So reporting that a guest actually said something this outrageous is the act of a “sissy man,” a “lying serpent,” and a “snake” who is “picking on a woman”? So pointing out that a host not only didn’t shut that guest down, but actually agreed with her makes you a member of “the devil’s team”? Yeah, OK.

What makes it even more outrageous is that if Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid, or Stephanie Miller had called for Greg Abbott to be lynched for signing Texas’ draconian new abortion restrictions into law, Daubenmire wouldn’t be saying they were merely making tongue-in-cheek comments. He’d be screaming for them to be summarily jailed without trial. But when a woman who describes herself as Alex Jones in a skirt makes a similar statement, she apparently deserves to be defended from any attempts to call her on it.

Daubenmire claims that Zilinsky has been the target of death threats in the last 24 hours. That’s unacceptable. But her call to lynch Brown, and Daubenmire’s endorsement of it, are equally unacceptable. And if Daubenmire thinks that we’re the devil’s agents for calling him on it, it says a lot about him–even more than the fact the original video from Wednesday is still there.

If Daubenmire has anything in him, he will apologize to Brown, take down Wednesday’s podcast, and ban Zilinsky from ever appearing on his show again. Let him have it on Facebook and on Twitter. And tell Zilinsky what you think of her outrageous threat on Facebook and on Twitter. While you’re at it, if Daubenmire isn’t willing to take it down, tell YouTube, Facebook, iTunes, Overcast, and Periscope to do it for him.

It cannot be stated enough–this sort of talk has no place in any remotely civilized discourse, no matter where it originates. Period.
