Those who support and defend President Trump no matter what he does are quickly running out of arguments for why he shouldn’t be investigated and impeached if he colluded with the Russians to influence the 2016 election.
One of those mindless minions, former New Hampshire Governor John Sununu, appeared on CNN’s New Day Monday morning, and got his ass handed to him by host Alisyn Camerota.
Early in the interview, Camerota mentioned that James Comey had testified how Trump had told him he wished the FBI investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn would go away. That send Sununu off on a debate about semantics. He told Camerota:
“He didn’t say ‘wish,’ he said ‘hope!'”
Camerota gladly conceded the point:
“OK, ‘I hope you can back off this investigation.'”
But Sununu still wasn’t happy, barking back:
“Nope, he didn’t say that, he said, ‘I hope this Michael Flynn thing would go away.”
Actually, what Comey testified the president said to him was:
“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go.”
As the interview continued, Sununu began accusing Camerota of trying to “spin” Comey’s testimony so it would sound like the president had tried to intimidate the FBI chief. And then the former governor started yelling, exclaiming at one point:
“He didn’t ask! You see, that’s the problem! You keep spinning it to an ask instead of an expression of an…an aspirational expression!”
An aspirational expression? Really? If that’s the best defense Sununu and other Trump apologists can make, then the president might as well go ahead and resign now, because there’s no hope for him once he’s under oath at a deposition.
Are there any true statesmen in the Republican Party, or is it just a collection of hacks who are only too happy to excuse treason?
