Democratic Congressman: Articles Of Impeachment Are Now Being Drafted Against Trump

The first step to impeaching the president is drawing up the articles of impeachment against him. And that is now being done, according to Texas Democratic Congressman Al Green.

Appearing on C-SPAN, Green said:

“We will move forward, and as a matter of fact, I am currently crafting, drafting if you will, articles of impeachment.”

Green also noted that he is working with attorneys who are experts on the Constitution. As soon as he has the formal articles of impeachment written, he will then introduce them in the House of Representatives, which then has two days to consider them:

“At some point, we’ll wait to see what others will do, and if no one else does, the president has committed an impeachable act, and I will take it upon myself to do that.”

There has been increasing talk in recent weeks of President Trump possibly having committed obstruction of justice with his attempts to shut down the FBI inquiry into possible collusion with Russian agents to influence the 2016 election. Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, then said in an interview the Russia investigation had been at the forefront of his mind when he did so.

Last week, it was reported that Trump told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak that he had let Comey go because he was a “nut job” who was determined to try and prove that he and his campaign had colluded with Russian officials as part of a larger conspiracy to make sure Trump became president.

While most Democrats have been reluctant to use the word impeachment, there appears to be momentum building among the progressive wing of the party to move ahead with the matter and make Republicans defend the president’s actions.

How likely is it that Trump would be impeached by a Republican Congress? Bookmakers now say there’s a 50-50 chance Trump will be forced from office before he completes his first term in office. And an analysis from FiveThirtyEight places the likelihood at between 25 and 50 percent.
