On Being Numb: How Fascism Is Creeping Into Our Lives (IMAGES)

How much more can the people of the United States take from the Trump administration and the cruel asshats in the GOP? It has been a constant assault on our rights since the inauguration. With the latest vote on the inhumane American Healthcare Act, are we at the ‘tipping point’?

Right now people are getting numb to this shit — they’re walking around like zombies wondering what comes next. Take everything away. Make the people hurt. Then give them back a tiny morsel of good and they will bow at your feet for making their lives better.

Study up — it works. That’s why they do it.

It pretty much ensures that people will rejoice over whatever comes out of the senate — because it will be better than the nothing they had after everything was taken away. So they’ll suck it up and rejoice over having ANYTHING for healthcare.

THAT is why the GOP was celebrating. They know that the AHCA won’t fly in the senate. But step one is complete – something so horrible has been proposed that people are crying in the streets in despair and it was handily passed by the House of Representatives.

So now when they present the people with something even just a tiny bit better they will rejoice.

We are being played in a big way.

Nothing describes this better than a cartoon named Strength Through Unity by Maia Kobabe that I found at The Nib.

The cartoon starts out simple enough, with a young man working at his local library. He is approached by an elderly man who seems almost ashamed at his odd selection of books – relating to Fascism, Hitler, and Concentration Camps. A conversation starts from there:

The old man talks of his youth and of watching the rise of Fascism in Italy. He talks of his father, and of prisoners being marched through the streets. Then he says that:

“looking back he was astonished over the lack of protests, the lack of public alarm.”

“I suppose it seemed normal.”

“It was just the way things were.”

Let that sink in a bit. Normal.

“It was just the way things were.”

The young man and the old man continue discussing Fascism and what it means to each of them. Kobabe drew out six panels showing the principles of Fascism and how they are manifesting right here in the United States:

Kobabe added additional signs such as the continuous obsession with national security, the mixing of church and state, the attacks on our labor unions, protecting corporate power over people, and last but certainly not least – fraudulent elections. This isn’t a liberal conspiracy. These things are really happening right here in our country, right now.

As the cartoon draws to a close, the young man exclaims that he keeps replaying the conversation in his head.

The final question is one we must ask ourselves every day – What will seem ‘normal’ to the children of today after these four years are over? If you think any of this will seem ‘normal’ then it is time to get out and get active.
