Chinese officials have said that we could have war “at any moment.” We have fired missiles at Syria and deployed a Navy force near North Korea. In Syria, we launched 59 Tomahawk missiles at a base. President Donald Trump made a veiled threat to start a war with North Korea. Trump said:
“China will either decide to help us with North Korea or they won’t. If they do, that will be very good for China, and if they don’t, it won’t be good for anyone.”
Surprisingly, the Chinese are coming up as the voice of reason in all of this mess. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said:
“One has the feeling that a conflict could break out at any moment. If a war occurs, the result is a situation in which everybody loses and there can be no winner.”
North Korea’s statement said:
“The closer such big targets as nuclear powered aircraft carriers come, the greater would be the effect of merciless strikes.”
The Chinese are seriously concerned about the threat of nuclear strikes from North Korea. The tensions between North Korea and the United States is growing. Vice President Mike Pence, who is visiting the area, says that the United States’ “era of strategic patience” is over.
Foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang says that China doesn’t want to say anything to raise the tensions further. They are still committed to the “denuclearization” of the Korean Peninsula. Lu said:
“I have noted the recent report. China expresses serious concern with recent trends about North Korea’s nuclear and missile development.”
“China is unswerving in its commitment to realizing the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, maintaining the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula, and continue to solve matters through dialogue and negotiations.”
It seems like a huge measuring contest with Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un these days.
