President Donald Trump is no stranger to making ridiculous, unsubstantiated claims. One of his most recent gaffes involved him accusing his predecessor, President Barack Obama, of personally ordering a wiretap of Trump Tower during the election:
Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!

How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!

Republicans have had a whale of a time trying to figure out just want to do with these unsubstantiated claims. Press Secretary Sean Spicer has had to deflect questions even more than usual, and Senators like John McCain (R-Ariz.) have spoken out for Trump to put up or shut up.
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) has finally weighed in on the controversy as well. Speaking to reporters on Thursday morning, Ryan squirmed his way through some questions before finally offering up this claim:
“The intelligence committees, in their continuing, ongoing, and widening investigation into all things Russia, got to the bottom, at least so far with respect to our intelligence community, that no such wiretap existed.”
That’s kind of a roundabout way to suggest your boss is an aggressive liar, but that’s how Ryan has done things since Republicans figured out they actually have to govern now, rather than just obstruct.
Another reporter asked Ryan about Trump’s recent interview with Tucker Carlson, where he claimed once again that such a wiretap occurred. In fact, Trump told Carlson:
“Wiretap covers a lot of different things. I think you’re going to find some very interesting items coming to the forefront over the next two weeks.”
Ryan was clearly done discussing the topic, as he snapped back at the reporter who asked the question:
“I didn’t see his interview.”
Leave Ryan alone! He’s busy trying to do other things, like eliminating Medicare and destroying the healthcare of millions of Americans. Watch the full exchange about wiretapping between Ryan and reporters below:
