It looks like former North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory’s feeling the sting of karmic justice after being ousted from office last November. Former Governor McCrory signed into law one of the most aggressive anti-LGBT bills every created. Here’s an explanation of HB2 from the Charlotte Observer written in March 2016 just after the law was passed:
“The state has long had laws regulating workplace discrimination, use of public accommodations, minimum wage standards, and other business issues. The new law – known as HB2, the Charlotte bathroom bill or, more officially, as the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act – makes it illegal for cities to expand upon those state laws, as more than a dozen cities had done, including Charlotte, Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham.
North Carolina’s new law sets a statewide definition of classes of people who are protected against discrimination: race, religion, color, national origin, age, handicap or biological sex as designated on a person’s birth certificate. Sexual orientation – people who are gay – was never explicitly protected under state law and is not now, despite recent court decisions that legalized same-sex marriage.”
After McCrory lost November’s election to current North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D), the state’s Republican-controlled legislature quickly defeated a proposal to repeal the controversial law also known as “the bathroom law,” because it prohibits transgender people from legally using the restroom of their gender identity.
During his tenure as governor, McCrory was an outspoken advocate of HB2 and made numerous television appearances defending it. During a press conference In March 2016, Governor McCrory claimed that HB2 did not discriminate against anyone, he said:
“We have not taken away any rights that currently existed in any city in North Carolina — from Raleigh, to Durham, to Chapel Hill, to Charlotte. Every city and every corporation has the exact same discrimination policy this week as they had two weeks ago. There’s a very well-coordinated campaign — a national campaign — which is distorting the truth — which is frankly smearing our state in an inaccurate way — which I’m working to correct… We have not changed one policy of any business in North Carolina or one policy of any employment status of any city government or county government in North Carolina.”
Despite McCrory’s protests to the contrary, most people view HB2 as a profoundly discriminatory law that threatens protections of all those in North Carolina’s LGBT community. And numerous businesses joined in boycotting the state, including the NBA and NCAA which both bring in millions of dollars whenever they hold their events.
It now appears that, like millions of North Carolina workers who’ve lost income because of the boycott, McCrory is also facing his own employment crisis. During a recent podcast interview with WORLD, an evangelical Christian news website based in Asheville, McCrory whined that the backlash from HB2:
“…Has impacted me to this day, even after I left office. People are reluctant to hire me, because, ‘oh my gosh, he’s a bigot’ – which is the last thing I am.”
Later in the interview, the former governor wouldn’t confirm if he’s under consideration for a job in President Donald Trump’s administration, but he did praise the president describing him as “a breath of fresh air.”
He went on to cry about liberal groups who oppose HB2 for harming his reputation, stating:
“If you disagree with the politically correct thought police on this new definition of gender, you’re a bigot, you’re the worst of evil. It’s almost as if I broke a law.”

McCrory then argued that the heart of the HB2 debate was an evil liberal plot to redefine gender. He said:
“You ask the doctor if it’s a boy or a girl, you don’t ask the baby.”
Well, it looks like former Governor McCrory will have plenty of time to refine his bigoted logic as he continues to search for someone willing to giving him a paycheck. And while he may have hopes that Santa Trump will offer him a position, he shouldn’t hold his breath. Just ask New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who happens to be another disgraced governor who was arguably the most loyal to Trump during his campaign.
