Think Trump’s First Month Was Bad? It’s About To Get Worse (VIDEO)

We’ve survived a month of President Donald Trump’s administration, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been a hot mess so far. From picking grossly incompetent cabinet members, to attacking the press, to that disastrous travel ban, the past 30 or so days have been eventful. And that’s just the light stuff.

He’s also insulted our allies, sent the international community mixed messages, and casually threatened to invade our neighbors. If you’re horrified, you’re not the only one, says Slate writer Michelle Goldberg. And we should only expect it to get worse.

Russian ex-pat Masha Gessen has been trying to tell us this since the election. In her November 10 article Autocracy: Rules for Survival she took her experience living under the oppressive Putin regime and passed the lessons on to Americans not used to the same tactics. Some people scoffed at the doom and gloom tone, as well as the comparison of the incoming president to an autocrat, but no one is laughing now.

Every day we turn on the TV, open our laptops, and check our phones expecting something worthy of at the very least an eye-roll, and at worst abject horror. We’ve endured a month of it, and many people are already tired. Gessen knows exactly how that feels:

“In the last three years, since I got to this country, I realized what a mental price I had paid for living in a state of siege and a state of battle for a decade and a half… but it’s intellectually deadening.”

For her part, Goldberg fears that our democracy has failed us. After all, most Americans didn’t want Trump. He was forced on us anyway. Conservative columnist Erick Erickson describes him as:

“…a means to an end and that end is finally giving back to a group of people who behave as cultural elitists and insist people of good faith and conscience conform to values that do not reflect them instead of embracing a live and let live culture.”

Who are the elitists now? It’s not the liberals. Who represents the people? It’s not the Republicans, and certainly not Donald Trump.

We have a huge problem in this country. And we’d better hold on for four years of fighting.
