Perhaps Donald Trump assumes that Americans by and large agree with his Muslim travel ban, which has been struck down by numerous federal courts. Perhaps he also assumes that Christians in the United States will support his position that no Muslims should be allowed into the country.
But based on the comments of some Ohioans who participated in a roundtable discussion for CNN, there are many in this country who don’t think what Trump is doing is fair or the least bit in keeping with the teachings of Jesus.
Christian Tamte, a resident of Columbus, Ohio, told moderator and CNN host Alisyn Camerota:
“I am heartbroken often. This last month has been heartbreaking and as a Christian I‘m offended often by what other people are calling Christian behavior which is — I see it as farthest from that.”
Tamte added that she sees a complete lack of human compassion in the Muslim ban Trump tried to impose before the courts intervened:
“There’s so much lack of empathy for anyone that’s different from themselves, and often times people that are claiming to be doing this in the name of Christ, in the name of God, it’s offensive to me. It’s offensive to me as a Christian because it is so far from what God has laid out as a plan for us.”
Mary Rheiman, a minister in Ohio, echoed what Tamte had said, telling Camerota:
“If you go to the Gospels, you can look at the story of Jesus and the woman with the well. She was a Samaritan, and Jews and Samaritans hated each other. There was a social contract that they did not speak to each other. Jesus’s message was, look, we are in this together, we are one. You can say you’re Muslim, we are Christian, it doesn’t matter.”
