Of course, it has to be my state. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) released a report saying that the hate groups in Alabama have gotten bigger for a third straight year.
The KKK has 11 active groups in Alabama. Here is a list of active hate groups in the state:
- United Klans of America, Ashland.
- Ku Klos Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Hazel Green and Vance.
- Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Cullman, Montgomery, Birmingham, Mobile and Huntsville.
- Militant Knights of the Ku Klux Klan
- Nordic Order Knights of the Ku Klux Klan
- United Dixie White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan
- Aryan Nations Sadistic Souls MC
- National Socialist Movement
- The Daily Stormer, Cullman.
- Occidental Dissent, Eufaula.
- Council of Conservative Citizens, Eufaula.
- Israel United In Christ, Birmingham.
- Nation of Islam, Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery.
- League of the South, Killen, Tuscaloosa, Wetumpka, Anniston.
- Southern National Congress, Wetumpka.
- Borderkeepers of Alabama, Birmingham.
Donald Trump running for and becoming president sparked an uptick in racist groups and racist rhetoric. He started his campaign by calling Mexicans rapists and criminals.
Mark Potok, senior fellow at the SPLC and the editor of the report, said:
“The radical right is growing leaner and meaner. The numbers are down somewhat, but the potential for violence remains high.”
“Moreover, there is a disturbing dynamic at play. At the same time that the number of extremist groups is dropping, there is more mainstream acceptance of radical-right ideas.”
Unfortunately, it is not just racist hate groups. There are plenty of Muslim hate groups around. It’s sad that we still have these hateful groups all over the place in 2017. Some of these groups are just hateful right-wingers in general.
I swear we are not all racist and hateful. There are plenty of good people here, too. There are plenty of good cities here.
