The people who are charged with insuring the accuracy and honesty of our national elections have just about had it with President Trump.
Trump claimed for months that there was voter fraud during the primaries. Nobody took it all that seriously, because the assumption was that he was looking for an excuse for when he lost.
But then he won.
At that point everybody assumed he’d let go of the whole “voter fraud” thing.
He didn’t.
Shortly after the election, President-elect Trump again complained that “millions” of illegal voters had cost him the popular vote. The truth is, of course, that the famously thin-skinned President can’t stand the thought of having been beaten at anything, any time. Even a vote that didn’t count.
Still, he insisted that there had been massive voter fraud. In an interview with Bill O’Reilly of Fox News on Superbowl Sunday, Trump said:
“Look, Bill, we can be babies, but you take a look at the registration, you have illegals, you have dead people, you have this – it’s a really a bad situation, it’s really bad.”
Then he announced that he was appointing Vice President Mike Pence to investigate the fraud.
Yeah. Mike Pence will check it out, but the people charged with investigating are being left in the dark.
Ellen Weintraub has had enough of these unsubstantiated claims. The commissioner on the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) is calling out the President and telling him to either put up or shut up.
Weintraub said:
“The President has issued an extraordinarily serious and specific charge. Allegations of this magnitude cannot be ignored.
I therefore call upon President Trump to immediately share his evidence with the public and with the appropriate law-enforcement authorities so that his allegations may be investigated promptly and thoroughly.”
It’s completely astonishing and totally unacceptable for the President of the United States to make serious claims of voter fraud, while refusing to provide the smallest bit of evidence.
Commissioner Weintraub doesn’t want to hear it. She wants to get the evidence from the President, and she wants to investigate what would be one of the biggest crimes in American history if it was true.
If Trump won’t produce any evidence, she really kind of wants him to stop complaining and whining and maybe just run the country for a change.
