Newly confirmed Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos got a rude welcome when she went to visit a school in Washington, D.C. on Friday morning.
DeVos was on her way to visit Jefferson Academy, but was greeted by about three dozen protesters at the side entrance of the school. Some carried signs which read:
“You do not represent anything that they stand for.”
When DeVos approached a stairway to enter the school, two men created a barrier with their arms by gripping the opposite railing. DeVos and a man accompanying her attempted to pass but instead turned around and left.
As she slinked away like a weasel, one man told DeVos:
“Giving money to senators and buying your way into the position, you should be so proud of yourself.”
As the Education Secretary got into a waiting SUV, a man began chanting “shame, shame.”
Later in the day, DeVos returned and was able to enter Jefferson Academy, but what she faced the first time she went to the school should come as no surprise to her or anyone in the Trump administration. DeVos did indeed contribute millions of dollars to prominent Republicans, including Donald Trump, and was rewarded with a plum cabinet post to head an agency she is totally unqualified to lead.
But DeVos is typical of how Republicans operate. There is a donor, a shakedown for cash, and a quid pro quo. In the case of DeVos, it’s the children of this country who will have to suffer for her deep pockets and desire to help destroy a department she has been at war with for decades.
Maybe DeVos needs to see if she can find a spare backbone on the open market and use some her cash to purchase one for herself.
