GOP Senator Admits His Party’s Obamacare Replacement Is A ‘Horrible Idea’ (VIDEO)

During a reporter briefing sponsored by The Heritage Foundation, Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee called the Republican Party’s plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act a “horrible idea.” However, he didn’t say this because he wants to keep Obamacare. Rather, he disagrees with the House Republicans’ plan to have replacement policies in the same legislation as the repeal.

Shockingly, Senator Lee admitted that it will be harder to repeal the Affordable Care Act if Republicans were to divulge their actual plans for replacing it.

A GOP Divided

As a whole, the GOP is divided over how to go about repealing Obamacare and replacing it with their “improved” version. House Republicans have stated they have a few potential replacement policies. They plan on including these changes in their appeal legislation.

The policies reportedly involve tax credits for those purchasing health insurance on the individual market, as well as funding high-risk pools and an expansion of health savings accounts.

Republicans’ Replacement Could Be A Disaster

The problem is, some members of the Republican Party are not confident these changes will be popular. Senator Lee explains:

“If we load down the repeal bill with what comes next, it’s harder to get both of them passed.”

Lee even went as far as to call the House GOP’s proposal to replace the Affordable Care Act a “horrible idea,” further saying:

“We need to repeal it first before deciding what comes next. I think there is a lot of agreement among Republicans in Congress with regard to the repeal bill. There is a lot less agreement on what comes next.”

These statements by a Republican Senator give an inside look into the dumpster fire that is the GOP’s attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare. Despite their reported policy replacements, it’s clear there is not a consensus among Republicans. They seem unsure about how to eliminate the ACA without causing massive damage to large portions of the American public.

The Cost Of Repealing Obamacare

No one can truthfully claim that Obamacare is perfect, but I believe situations like this are where we see it succeeding. The Affordable Care Act is too big and too powerful to repeal without having a massively well thought out plan to replace it.

The act of repealing Obamacare could reportedly eliminate over 1 million jobs, kill the Medicaid expansion, and more importantly, lead to the deaths of possibly tens of thousands of uninsured citizens each year.

Does Obamacare have its issues?

Absolutely. But no policy can ever be perfect. Creating a policy that has saved the lives of thousands of Americans will be a major part of President Barack Obama’s legacy. Repealing that policy may be the downfall of the legacy for the current Republican Party.
