There has been a shooting at a nightclub in Istanbul during the local New Year’s celebrations at Reina, a large, popular club in the middle of the city where several hundred people were in the club celebrating.

Traffic in key squares of Istanbul and at the capitol building have been closed by police. There are about 17,000 officers on duty tonight. Some are disguised in Santa suits; others are disguised as street vendors.
At first, they thought it might have been two attackers. The latest reports say it was just one suspect. The gunman was disguised in a Santa suit.
At least 35 people have been killed, and possibly 40 people have been wounded. One officer may be among the 35 people who have died. It happened around 1:30 am local time.
Emergency services, special forces, and explosives experts are on the scene.
Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin is calling it a “terrorist attack.” He didn’t say who carried out the incident.
Istanbul has been rocked by multiple attacks in the last year. Back in July, an attack at Ataturk airport killed over 40 people and injured about 230.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said:
“The bombs that exploded in Istanbul today could have gone off at any airport in any city around the world.”
This is a developing story. We don’t have all of the details yet.
Here are some of the Twitter reactions:
#HappyNewYear my heart is crying for the terror Istanbul is experiencing at this moment. Cold hearted idiots should not exist.

Tragic reports of #Istanbul carnage … May 2017 be a year where those who inflict violence on innocents meet with appropriate justice.
