Kellyanne Conway Named Counselor To Trump (VIDEO)

The appropriately named Kellyanne Conway was named to be Counselor to the President, The New York Times reported early this morning.

Even more interesting than her ability to deftly answer questions concerning the controversy surrounding President-elect Donald Trump, is that she appears to be one of the only people with direct access to Trump with the ability to make him listen to her.

Whether it is through slipping intel into re-runs of SNL or drafting alternate tweets, no one knows. However, Conway has shattered more than one glass ceiling and is unique for that. One is the first female campaign manager of a successful campaign. Another is being chosen as the first female counselor to the president.

This has led to an important question, one that the country (by which I mean Twitter) is deeply divided over: Is this a win for women?

The response to Conway is muddied, in part, by a larger political conversation about feminism and its role in society. Conservatives and liberals alike have argued that Hillary Clinton lost in large part due to her concentration on “identity politics,” and the idea that people could want Clinton for a job, not because she was qualified, but simply because she was a woman.

However, the response to Conway’s appointment among liberals (aside from obviously sexist critiques like voice or looks) shows a political sophistication liberals don’t often get credit for. Their aversion to Sarah Palin, Kellyanne Conway, Ivanka Trump, Megyn Kelly, Ben Carson, or Sheriff David Clarke clearly shows that they are not interested in diversity for diversity’s sake, but are equally interested in talent, intelligence, and strength of ideas.

In short, contrary to popular belief, being a woman isn’t enough to make you a feminist, and neither is hiring one. And covering for a monster doesn’t make you a feminist. It makes you a prop.

It really is about, as Martin Luther King would put it, “the content of one’s character.” The “Trump Whisperer” had better hope that she can stay in the President’s good graces in the coming months and years.
