For the past eight years, Republicans have created a fictitious bubble of crazy that only they know the combination to. Facts are for illegal immigrant terrorists and no red-blooded Trumplican can be bothered with such low-energy trivial. In fact, fact-checkers may be the only jobs that a Trump Administration creates.
But in their seemingly never-ending quest to distort commonplace facts in order to maintain their angry white guy base, conservatives have set themselves up for one YUUGE fail. And that fail just came to them from the purveyors of fake news: Facebook.
Facebook just made conservative news outlets even angrier by announcing it will be partnering with third-party fact checkers in an effort not allow spammers and hoaxers to profit off of fake news.
Here was their announcement:
“We believe providing more context can help people decide for themselves what to trust and what to share. We’ve started a program to work with third-party fact-checking organizations that are signatories of Poynter’s International Fact Checking Code of Principles. We’ll use the reports from our community, along with other signals, to send stories to these organizations. If the fact checking organizations identify a story as fake, it will get flagged as disputed and there will be a link to the corresponding article explaining why. Stories that have been disputed may also appear lower in News Feed.”
Not surprisingly, the butthurt coming from alt-right news land is so severe that now might be the time to purchase stock in Preparation H.
The Daily Caller, a very dickish news outlet that tries so hard not to be dickish, was quite displeased that Snopes is one of the fact checkers that Facebook will be using. In fact, they went so far as to claim they “debunked” some of Snopes‘ debunking. And over at Breitbart, fact-checking is apparently a super-partisan thing.
Here was Breitbart:
“Facebook has announced it will introduce warning labels on stories they deem to be ‘fake news,’ with the help of partisan ‘fact checking’ organisations such as Snopes and PolitiFact.”
And being the bathroom graffiti of the news world, the Drudge Report ripped Facebook by simply saying “FAKEBOOK TO LABEL ‘NEWS’.”
The fact remains that Facebook has no intentions of censoring conservative opinions, but rather wants to level the playing field and weed out the cheap charlatans.
The sick irony is that conservatives only have themselves to blame after complaining over what they believed to be biased Facebook’s News Feed editors. This eventually led to the termination of the editors.
But manufacturing outrage over shit they did is what they do best. Well, that and posting fake news.
