President-elect Donald Trump is in the process of assembling his cabinet, and it looks like the environment is in big trouble. Numerous climate change-deniers are going to move into positions of extreme power, and the GOP has long focused on climate change as an exaggerated myth. California Governor Jerry Brown (D) is not impressed.
Brown vows to continue to fight for a cleaner, healthier environment. The LA Times reports that Brown spoke at the American Geophysical Union on Wednesday to a group of climate scientists. Brown told them:
“We’ve got the scientists, we’ve got the lawyers and we’re ready to fight.”
California has long been a leader in studying climate change and enacting progressive policies to help slow down the effect that humanity has on the shifting climate.
Gov. Brown continued his attack on the Trump administration when responding to the fear that it may slash or eliminate funding for NASA. He told the crowd:
“If Trump turns off the satellites, California will launch its own damn satellite!”
Brown turned his attention to one particular member of the incoming administration: former Texas Governor Rick Perry (R). Trump recently picked Perry to run the Department of Energy in his administration. Perry infamously forgot the Department of Energy existed when naming sectors of the government to eliminate, dooming his 2012 run for the Republican Presidential nomination.
Brown told the crowd that Perry could do nothing to stop California’s pursuit of renewable energy, stating:
“California is growing a hell of a lot faster than Texas. And we’ve got more sun than you have oil.”
Finally, Brown urged the assembled scientists to mobilize as both “truth-tellers” and “truth-seekers.”
