It has been nearly four years since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. To make us never forget, Sandy Hook Promise has released a gun violence PSA that tells us we should know the signs.
Newtown parents Nicole Hockley, and Mark Barden both lost their six-year-old sons in the shooting. Along with other victims’ loved ones and community members, they formed Sandy Hook Promise. This is a nonprofit that is trying to protect children from gun violence.
Sandy Hook Promise has started a new campaign called Know the Signs. To help launch the campaign, they released the new PSA titled “Evan.” In the PSA, we get a look into the lives of some high school students.
As you watch, you know there is going to be something terrible that happens. I mean, it is a gun violence PSA after all. You can watch the public service announcement yourself, and you’ll understand.
After watching, you now know what I mean. I did not see the twist at the end coming at all. You are so focused on Evan that you miss the other things going on around him. I think that is how a lot of us live our lives and why we should be looking out for those signs. Sometimes they are right in front of our face, and we miss it.
As far as the powerful message in the PSA, a Sandy Hook Promise representative said:
“The PSA demonstrates how easy it is for one to overlook the signs of an at-risk individual demonstrating signs of violence, particularly gun violence, and that when one knows the signs, it can be prevented.”
It is a brilliant message from Sandy Hook Promise and one we should remember, especially as the four-year anniversary of such a tragic moments is upon us.
