After choosing quite worrying cabinet members, President-elect Donald Trump, has surprised us all. He has reportedly been consulting someone with real presidential experience. That’s right: apparently, Trump has spoken with President Barack Obama on the phone several times.
What they are talking about is up for speculation, but the conversations have been said to have lasted 45 minutes and at times 90 minutes. We can only hope some listening is being done.
This was an election where the loser won, where the same winner campaigned with fear and vague rhetoric.
At a time when many people feel political despair, based on the recent results, President Obama continues to be a calm, voice of reason. In reaction to Trump winning the presidency, he recently told the New Yorker:
“I don’t believe in apocalyptic—until the apocalypse comes. I think nothing is the end of the world until the end of the world.”
Obama takes his presidential responsibilities seriously. He is willing to usher in a man who accused him of being born abroad and with whom he totally disagrees on most issues. He is willing to do this purely because he is decent, professional, and respects democracy. Although Obama is obviously very disappointed with the outcome, he is still willing to help guide him into office.
We liberals have every reason to be concerned about the incoming president. During the campaign, he made some very disturbing threats towards the vulnerable.
The most we can hope for is that Trump will seek and take good counsel.
Based on an abundance of tweets, Donald Trump seems to be actually quite insecure.
Perhaps the gravity of the situation he is in has hit him. He is, after all, a businessman who has somehow managed to be elected President of the United States.
This is the first time that someone with absolutely no experience in public office or the military has been able to swing this. This fact alone is enough to disturb the most laid back among us.
If Trump is willing to listen to people like Obama, then maybe — just maybe — we have a chance of a safe landing four years from now, without too much lasting damage.
