Since the election of Donald J. Trump, many of us have been feeling like the world has gone completely insane. We feel as if our reality has turned inside out.
This is even truer to the innocent people who’ve been caught up in the racist fears that are sweeping the nation.
Take for example a young Black man named Ricky Berry of Virginia. He and his roommate, Phillip Blackwell, did what lots of young people do late at night.
They got hungry.
So they decided to run out to find some sliced cheese.
They found that one place that was open in Carytown, Virginia, was the local CVS pharmacy. They went inside and looked for cheese.
Not particularly terrifying behavior, right?
The two men weren’t able to find any cheese, so they did what most of us would do. They asked one of the employees if the store carried cheese.
According to RawStory, the employee told the men that there was no cheese in the store, then he disappeared.
The men continued to wander around the store, but they couldn’t find either cheese or any employees. One other customer came in to get something for a toothache, but he couldn’t find any employees either.
Finally, a police officer entered the CVS. The men explained to the officer that they couldn’t figure out where the employees had gone. He helped them to search, and eventually they found the employees huddled in a backroom, with the door locked.
They were terrified of the men who wanted some cheese.
The officer was as bemused as the two roommates. Berry explained:
“He was laughing with us because, like, this is how weird, apocalyptic movies start.”
The two hungry young men still had a sense of humor at this point. But then the officer made a phone call and came back to order them out of the store.
Yup.
Two guys who got hungry late at night were threatened with arrest because the color of their skin scared some dimwitted store employee who’s been listening to the fear mongers.
We’ve come to a place in our country where you can be arrested for shopping for cheese while Black.
The world has gone completely insane.
