Yesterday, we woke up to the news that Fidel Castro, former President of Cuba, died at the age of 90. The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave a very warm statement about Castro.
Trudeau said:
“While a controversial figure, both Mr Castro’s supporters and detractors recognised his tremendous dedication and love for the Cuban people who had a deep and lasting affection for “el Comandante.”
“I know my father was very proud to call him a friend and I had the opportunity to meet Fidel when my father passed away. It was also a real honour to meet his three sons and his brother President Raúl Castro during my recent visit to Cuba.”
American elected officials were not quite so nice about it. Trump said that Castro was “a brutal dictator.”
President Obama was a bit more civil:
“… History will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him.”
Twitter users are responding in droves to Trudeau’s statement with the hashtag, #trudeaueulogies. They give warm eulogies to infamous hated historical figures. The amount of snark on Twitter knows no bounds.

Trudeau defended what he said Sunday, saying:
“He certainly was a polarizing figure and there certainly were significant concerns around human rights. That’s something that I’m open about and highlighted, but on the passing of his death I expressed a statement that highlighted the deep connection between the people of Canada and the people of Cuba.”
