South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham Offers Trump Odd Advice On The Supreme Court (VIDEO)

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) recently offered some curious advice to President-elect Trump about the open seat on the Supreme Court that he will be tasked with filling (since the Senate has obstructed President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, for almost a year).

Graham has never been one to mince words. When the Republican presidential primaries had narrowed to only two viable competitors, Donald Trump and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Graham was asked which of the two he would prefer. He famously quipped:

“Again, it’s like being shot or poisoned. What does it really matter?”

Speaking with South Carolina’s WYFF, Graham advocated to elect poison to the country’s highest court:

“I’m here to tell my Democratic colleagues that I voted for Obama’s nominees. I expect them to give Trump’s nominees a fair shake. He won this election. He will pick a conservative. I would put Ted Cruz on that list … There are some really strong people in there. And there is no stronger constitutional conservative than Ted Cruz.”

Graham’s advice is frightening for a few reasons. Although Cruz is a fairly talented legal mind, his interpretation of the constitution and conservative approach to the law would be a frightening combination when dealing with cases on things like abortion or gun control. Graham’s advice also serves as a warning to Senate Democrats who now find themselves in a very tight spot after the election went poorly for the left. The senator continued:

“If they try to block this pick, they will regret it. If you don’t honor Trump’s nominee, you’re making a huge mistake.”

Strange words, considering how Republicans have treated Garland and threatened to treat any nominee for the Supreme Court that Hillary Clinton would have made, had she won the presidency.

Republican senators could kill two birds with one stone if Cruz was elected to the Supreme Court. Cruz is the exact kind of justice that Republicans want on the bench: a young (Cruz is only 45 years old), unbending conservative with little to no compromise in his Tea Party beliefs. Second, Cruz is generally disliked by his peers in the Senate, so shipping him off to the Supreme Court probably sounds like a good idea.

It is not a good idea. Ted Cruz would be a nightmare of a Supreme Court justice. Hopefully President-elect Trump still holds enough of a grudge against Ted Cruz to keep him off the highest court in the land.
