Yesterday, FBI Director James Comey wrote a letter to Congress saying that some new emails were discovered related to the case of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
She has been getting flak over her email server that she used while she was Secretary of State in 2008. The FBI has previously cleared her of any wrongdoing. The RWNJs ran with this new email news and said the entire investigation is being reopened when it’s not.
The Department of Justice sent a complaint to the FBI.
Former Attorney General Eric Holder was very upset about Comey sending this letter:
“That decision was incorrect. It violated long-standing Justice Department policies and tradition. And it ran counter to guidance that I put in place four years ago laying out the proper way to conduct investigations during an election season.”
Comey doesn’t even know what the emails contain, or if they have anything to do with Hillary Clinton. They were found on a laptop that belongs to ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner.
Holder also said:
“I fear [Comey] has unintentionally and negatively affected public trust in both the Justice Department and the FBI. And he has allowed — again without improper motive — misinformation to be spread by partisans with less pure intentions.”
The Justice Department doesn’t usually comment on ongoing investigations, or take major actions this close to a presidential election. They try not to do anything that can drastically sway the election to either side of the political spectrum.
Administrations of both parties have followed these rules – until now.
Holder said:
“Instead, they are intended to ensure that every investigation proceeds fairly and judiciously; to maintain the public trust in the department’s ability to do its job free of political influence; and to prevent investigations from unfairly or unintentionally casting public suspicion on public officials who have done nothing wrong.”
