Rubio Avoiding The Trump Route: ‘I Won’t Talk About WikiLeaks’ (TWEET)

Republican senator and former presidential candidate Marco Rubio has certainly not always seen eye to eye with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. As the Trump campaign attacks Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton over hacked emails published on WikiLeaks, Rubio is taking a very different approach:

Rubio spoke with ABC News about why Republicans are making a mistake by using the hacked emails to criticize Clinton:

“As our intelligence agencies have said, these leaks are an effort by a foreign government to interfere with our electoral process and I will not indulge it. Further, I want to warn my fellow Republicans who may want to capitalize politically on these leaks: Today it is the Democrats. Tomorrow it could be us.”

As WikiLeaks continues to publish more emails from Clinton and the Democratic National Committee, Trump and his campaign continue to attack based off of the leaked information. Most experts agree that the leaks are coming from a Russian hacking group with the intent of swaying the presidential election to Donald Trump and undermining the Democratic process.

Rubio broke completely with the presidential candidate and many others in his party who are scrambling to stop a Clinton landslide victory that seems more and more likely with every new poll. He unequivocally stated:

“I will not discuss any issue that has become public solely on the basis of WikiLeaks.”

There are a few reasons why Rubio could be taking this stance. He is locked in a tight Senate race with Democratic candidate Patrick Murphy and could be trying to appeal to moderates by taking the high ground. He most likely sees the writing on the wall for the presidential election and is positioning himself for the aftermath.

This could also be Rubio’s way of attacking Trump, a man whom he probably views as someone who hijacked and is destroying the Republican party. Rubio endorsed Trump in July at the Republican National Convention, but he did not seem very enthusiastic about it.

Expect Trump to focus on the leaked emails in tonight’s final debate, and expect Clinton to use Marco Rubio’s statements as a demonstration of the growing disharmony within Trump’s own party.
