The New York Times responded to Donald Trump’s threats of a lawsuit after they published an article about the two women who are claiming sexual assault by the presidential candidate. Their response to Trump lawyers’ ended with a killer last line.
The original article, published October 12th, recounted multiple women’s accusations of being kissed and groped without their consent. The women came forward after the release of secret tapes where Trump described sexually assaulting and harassing different women.
Trump lawyers’ quickly came forward and demanded the article be retracted on the basis that it was “reckless, defamatory and constitutes libel per se.”
David E. McCraw, Assistant General Counsel for The New York Times, stated:
“It would have been a disservice not just to our readers but to democracy itself to silence their voices. We did what the law allows: We published newsworthy information about a subject of deep public concern. If Mr. Trump disagrees, if he believes that American citizens had no right to hear what these women had to say and that the law of this country forces us and those who would dare to criticize him to stand silent or be punished, we welcome the opportunity to have a court set him straight.”
Trump has denied all allegations the women have made and stated:
“These vicious claims about me of inappropriate conduct with women are totally and absolutely false.”
Trump continues to blame the Democratic party and says he will be able to prove these allegations false because there were no witnesses. Well, Donald, there rarely are witnesses to sexual misconduct.
