Texas’s Anchor of Hope Baptist Church, has decided to take a stand against the most unholy of all man’s inventions: booze. Craft beer is singled out in huge letters of a recent newspaper ad that has been doing the rounds on Reddit, but the ad also mentions wine as being particularly evil.
The ad begins with a call to action from the Book of Peter:
“Be SOBER, be vigilant; because Your Adversary the DEVIL, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”
The ad then goes on to list several Biblical examples where alcohol is consumed by bad people and bad things happen to them, whereas good people do not partake. Two examples given are of Jesus and his disciples avoiding wine.
The two statements in the ad are as follows:
“JESUS never drank booze ~ he drank the fruit of the vine… Grape Juice.”
“The Disciples never drank booze ~ They drank ‘new wine’… Grape Juice.”
For a man who thought of alcohol as a mortal sin, Jesus had a funny way of showing it. His first miracle in the Book of John involved turning water into wine at the wedding of Cana in Galilee. His disciples were also known to drink wine, including at a little thing called the Last Supper.
The advertisement ends on a rather dramatic note:
“Will we sell the youth of Canyon for the revenues of booze?”
The idea behind the advertisement is clear: all those who drink and anything related to alcohol is pure evil, and the citizens of Canyon, Texas, must stop its sinful profits before it is too late.
It seems strange that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has courted the religious right, yet he is a man who once released his own brand of vodka. Judging from his general attitude and some of his comments on his daughter, Ivanka, a different statement from the ad seems more fitting for him:
“Lot drank booze ~ and committed immorality and incest.”
Trump may claim that he’s never had booze in his life, but I wonder what Christ’s thoughts on cocaine use are?
