Rush Limbaugh: Hurricanes Are A ‘Left-Wing Conspiracy’ (TWEETS/VIDEO)

Hurricane Matthew, is headed for the East Coast. Thousands of people are traveling inland to avoid it. It is hitting Florida and South Carolina today. Florida Governor Rick Scott said:

“We are preparing for the worst, we are hoping for the best, and we’re not taking any chances.”

Kooky, Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh actually thinks that the hurricane is some kind of left-wing conspiracy.

He said that the National Hurricane Center is “playing games” with its forecasts to cause false alarms. He thinks they are doing this to get people to believe in climate change.

In his words:

“It’s in the interest of the left to have destructive hurricanes because then they can blame it on climate change, which they can desperately continue trying to sell.”

Twitter users are reacting to his stupidity:

He did admit that Matthew is actually headed towards Florida, and it is a “serious storm.” It has already killed dozens in the Caribbean. He claimed that it is the worst storm we’ve had in over a decade and that we have had 11 straight years of no “major” hurricanes.

Although it is true that we have not had any category 3 or higher hurricanes in 11 years, you don’t need a category 3 hurricane to have storm damage. Limbaugh seems to think that Al Gore has prophesied more hurricanes, but that is not true.

In 2005, a few weeks after Hurricane Katrina, Al Gore said:

Yes, it is true that no single hurricane can be blamed on global warming. Hurricanes have come for a long time, and will continue to come in the future. Yes, it is true that the science does not definitively tell us that global warming increases the frequency of hurricanes – because yes, it is true there is a multi-decadal cycle, 20 to 40 years that profoundly affects the number of hurricanes that come in any single hurricane season. But it is also true that the science is extremely clear now, that warmer oceans make the average hurricane stronger, not only makes the winds stronger, but dramatically increases the moisture from the oceans evaporating into the storm – thus magnifying its destructive power – makes the duration, as well as the intensity of the hurricane, stronger.”

Dear Rush, Al Gore didn’t specifically say that we would have hurricanes. It’s not that simple. Climate change does affect the intensity of hurricanes, but we can’t be sure that we will have more of them because of that. Limbaugh is over-simplifying the situation.

In April, we were excited to hear that Limbaugh might be losing his contract, but that hasn’t happened just yet. He got his contract renewed, but is no longer getting a salary for it.
