Rudy Giuliani seems to be enjoying his return to the public eye as one of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s minions. The former mayor of New York City recently went on NBC News to defend his stance that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is “too stupid” to be president. He also attempted to defend his own infidelity in a shocking way.
Giuliani Says ‘Everybody’ Does It
In a shocking statement, Giuliani, an avowed Roman Catholic, told NBC News that his past indiscretions do not preclude him from passing judgment on Hillary Clinton.
The original statement, covered by my colleague Michelle Oxman, included the following:
“… And after being married to Bill Clinton for 20 years, if you didn’t know the moment Monica Lewinsky said that Bill Clinton violated her, she was telling the truth, then you’re too stupid to be president.”
Giuliani’s appearance on “Meet the Press” with host Chuck Todd included quite a bit of discussion on Trump’s tax returns, but then Todd switched to Giuliani’s “too stupid” remark. Giuliani has a record of very public infidelity. He announced his separation from his second wife at a press conference. To add insult to injury, he didn’t tell her beforehand.
It’s understandable, then, for Todd to ask him:
“Are you the right person to level this charge? … You have your own infidelity, sir.”
Giuliani’s response?
“Everybody does, and I’m a Roman Catholic and I confess those things to my priest.”
Oh, the cheatsplaining and mansplaining is strong with this one! “Everybody” has infidelity in their past? If Giuliani actually believes that, he must be one sad, paranoid little man.
Giuliani also maintains that Bill Clinton “violated” Monica Lewinsky. Ms. Lewinsky herself has said that the relationship was consensual.
Did your ex-wife consent to the press conference in which you ended your marriage to her, Mr. Giuliani? And, while we’re on the subject, did the taxpayers consent to having your affair billed to them?
It’s OK For Trump And Giuliani, But Not Clinton
So, by Giuliani’s logic, cheating is fine if you confess. Oh, and “everybody” does it. And, apparently, it’s OK that Trump is a serial womanizer, charged several times with rape or attempted rape, and also allegedly forced his ex-wife to pose nude against her will.
But Hillary Clinton chose to try to make her marriage work, and that, somehow, makes her less of a person.
It’s just another demonstration of the deep misogyny that runs through the Trump campaign and, honestly, through society in general. He is calling Hillary Clinton “stupid” for saying that she didn’t know about her husband’s affair with Ms. Lewinsky. Would he call his own ex-wife stupid?
And would ANY thrice-married woman EVER be at the top of a presidential ticket? Forget his marriages for a moment. Would ANY woman with a past like Trump’s make it as far as he has?
The answer to both of those is, unequivocally, no.
