First LGBT Pride Flag Launched Into Outer Space (VIDEO)

Outer space is now safe space for the LGBTQ community. A Kansas-based organization, Planting Peace, made it so. They did it by launching a rainbow flag into space and declaring space an LGBTQ-friendly zone.

Soaring In A Balloon

Planting Peace used a balloon to launch the flag from suburban Milwaukee and recorded it with a GoPro camera.

The flag was in the sky for more than three hours. At its peak, the flag soared 21.1 miles above the surface of the earth. That’s well into the stratosphere, according to the NASA.

Spreading A Message Of Peace

The purpose of the declaration was to support the ongoing fight for human rights for the LGBTQ members of the human family, creating the largest possible safe space, and:

“…Moving us closer to a universal understanding that all people deserve to live freely and love freely without fear of discrimination.”

In particular, the group sent this message to the LGBTQ community:

“You are loved, valued, and beautiful. There is nothing wrong with you. You are not alone, and we will stand with you.”

Planting Peace has also declared Antarctica the first LGBTQ-friendly continent. Watch the flag fly to space:

Creative Expression

Planting Peace is based in Topeka, Kansas. One of its creative messages is the Equality House, a rainbow-striped house that serves as its headquarters.  And it purposely located the house across from Westboro Baptist Church.

You may remember Westboro for picketing funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. Their message: God hates America because it tolerates gays.

Planting Peace funds a deworming project—treatment to rid hungry children of parasites—in Haiti, Sudan, the Dominican Republic, and other countries.

It also operates six orphanages on several continents. Two serve special needs populations, one for HIV-infected children and one for children with disabilities. It donates seeds to regrow forests and buys land in the Peruvian rain forest to protect it from decimation.
