The Trump campaign is putting on a happy face, pretending they aren’t the least bit worried about tonight’s debate between the GOP nominee and Hillary Clinton, but as their candidate continues to be caught in his own web of lies, cracks are beginning to show in their carefully scripted facade.
On Morning Joe today, campaign manager Kellyanne Conway was asked a very simple question by Mark Halperin: Why in the world did Trump whine about tonight’s debate moderator, Lester Holt, being a Democrat when in fact Holt is a registered Republican? Halperin told Conway:
“He made a factual claim about the moderator, who deserves to be treated fairly, and it was just wrong. And it’s a metaphor for his frequently, in public, stating things with no basis.”
Rather than respond directly to the query from Halperin, Conway, as she so often does, attempted to question the very nature of the inquiry:
“I think it’s a terrible and irrelevant example. And here’s why: We were appalled at the treatment of NBC News’s Matt Lauer after the Commander-in-Chief Forum.”
But the Bloomberg Politics host was not about to let Conway wriggle off the hook so easily, telling her:
“That’s not what I’m asking you. I’m asking you how someone who’s running for president can assert, on the eve of the debate, that the moderator is a Democrat, which is factually incorrect. How can he do that?”
Conway once again dodged, asserting that most members of the media are Democrats. Of course, she offered no proof of her allegation.
Mika Brzezinski then attempted to get a straight answer from Conway, wondering:
“Why did he lie about Lester Holt?”
Once more Conway failed to respond in a manner that would constitute an actual reply, saying:
“He didn’t lie. A lie would mean that he knew the man’s party registration.”
Halperin asked the Trump campaign manager if her candidate would continue to say things without trying to determine the truth of such statements. Conway floundered around and never got to answering that question, either.
After tonight’s debate, expect the Trump surrogates and campaign staff to be fumbling replies to even more questions about the lies Donald Trump has told.
