One thing we can say for Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump is that he doesn’t take “no” for an answer.
The Huffington Post reports that the self described billionaire opened the latest of his signature Trump International Hotels in the very area where he hopes to live very soon.
The newest Trump Hotel is located at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington D.C.
Yes, that Pennsylvania Avenue. A few blocks away from the White House, which is at number 1600 on the very same street.
Oh, brother.
If you can’t win an election, but you are determined to change your return address labels to “Pennsylvania Avenue,” I guess this is one way to do it.
Not everyone is happy to see the upscale property opening in the heart of the nation’s capital. Protesters gathered outside the property on Monday as it was having what the staff called a “soft opening.”
It is Trump’s racist rhetoric that has prompted the protests. Andrew Castro of Baltimore was the organizer of the protest. He said:
“We’re out here building a wall against racism.”
Trump plans a “Grand Opening” for next month, which will of course be only a few weeks before the election.
Another thing you can say for Mr. Trump is that he certainly is masterful at keeping the media spotlight on himself.
The fancy hotel, which is within walking distance of the White House, is Trump’s most notable project in Washington. It’s located in a historic building that underwent a 2 year $200 million dollar renovation.
Trump clearly hopes that his “I can see the White House from my porch” project will be lucrative. He has taken a 60 year lease on the property and will spend $3 million per year to rent it from the U.S. government.
Of course, if you want to rent a room in the hotel, prices start at $396. Suites go for the bargain price of $556 a night.
Can you imagine this scene:
Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton wins the Presidency. On the day of her inauguration in January, the celebratory parade moves along Pennsylvania Avenue. As it passes the lovely hotel at #1100, the cameras catch sight of the loser, Donald Trump, standing on the balcony. The Secret Service moves in close around the Clintons… just in case…
