Hundreds of thousands of American mothers, travel mug in hand, and sidestep toys on the floor as they leave for work. Huma Abedin, aide to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, left her toddler son with his father as she accompanied her boss on the campaign trail.
Every working mom knows the anxiety of leaving a child in someone else’s care. It’s a sacred trust. We address our concerns as thoroughly as possible. We push the what-ifs to the back of our heads, and roll out the door to work.
Huma Abedin’s husband, Anthony Weiner, violated that trust with a third sexting scandal. This time, their son was literally in the picture.
Huma, like thousands of other American women, probably had to add “find child care” and “consult attorney” to her task list that day.
By the time Huma landed in the White House in 1996, another intern named Monica Lewinsky had already been visiting the Oval Office for several months. Paula Jones had filed a sexual harassment suit against then-President Bill Clinton.
Lewinsky later became a household name when her sexual relationship with Bill Clinton led to a political scandal.
Abedin, herself a young intern, had been assigned to First Lady Hillary Clinton’s office. She must have learned well, as Hillary Clinton continued to work for the public interest amidst humiliating revelations about her husband’s behavior.
Here are a few of Hillary’s achievements during that time:
- In 1995, she began fighting for investigation into Gulf War Syndrome.
- She helped the passage of the Children’s Health Insurance Program in 1997, and it continues to flourish today.
- She helped increase research funding for asthma and prostate cancer.
- Worked from 1995-1997 on adoption, orphan, and related family issues, all of which helped the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 pass.
After Bill Clinton left office, Hillary assumed more visible roles, such as becoming Senator of the State of New York and the U.S. Secretary of State. Huma continued with Ms. Clinton through it all.
The public troubles with Abedin’s husband began with the first accidental Tweet of his bulge back in May 2011.
Despite treatment, there was a second indiscretion. Weiner resigned from Congress at that time. In 2013, he lost a bid for Mayor of New York City after yet another online sex chat became known.
Huma Abedin has proved her grit by staying on task. By all accounts, she’s virtually indispensable to Hillary Clinton. Regardless of the misadventures of their men, both women continue to show up. That’s just like the rest of America’s working women.
