As American voters, we feel stressed and anxious about having to deal with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Imagine being one of the elected representatives in Mexico City. Imagine having to go to work every day, trying to pass laws that will help your people, all the while being hit over the head with Trump’s ugly rhetoric about your country.
Imagine trying to do your job for your country while just over the border there is a loudmouthed bully with nothing to offer his country other than violent rhetoric and an amazingly awful dye job. You try to focus on the poverty in your city, and you try to pass laws that will improve the education of the children you represent.
Then you hear that your President, a man who is only slightly more popular than syphilis, has invited the bombastic GOP candidate to come to Mexico City for a closed door meeting.
How would you feel about that?
The Huffington Post reports that Mexico City’s legislative representatives were outraged to hear that Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto had invited Trump to a meeting. They knew about Trump’s insistence on building a big, strong, impenetrable wall between Mexico and the United States. They knew that the GOP blowhard had won the nomination in the U.S. partly because of his insistence that Mexico would actually pay for the building of that wall.
So what would you do?
The Mexico City Legislature met to make a statement that Donald J. Trump is considered to be “morally a persona non-grata” in the city. The representatives went on to demand that President Nieto demand an apology from Trump for his claims that Mexico sends rapists and criminals to the U.S.
I hope they aren’t holding their breath.
It has been funny and exasperating to hear Trump’s supporters cheering about his “statesmanlike” visit to Mexico. Yay, way to go, Donald!
What a fabulous start to a career as a “world leader.” Right before he arrived, he was labelled as unwelcome by the elected government. Right after he arrived, the President he had met with called him a liar.
