In an August 25 speech, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said that the Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s campaign is based on “prejudice and paranoia.”
This prejudice is spreading. Back in February, a high school basketball game turned into a racism-fest. One of the schools that were playing has a high population of Hispanic students.
The rival school held up signs with Donald Trump’s face on them and started yelling, “Build a wall.”
Clinton remarked:
“Next time you see Trump rant on television, think about all the children listening across America. Kids hear a lot more than we think. Parents and teachers are already worrying about what they call the ‘Trump Effect.’ They report that bullying and harassment are on the rise in our schools, especially targeting students of color, Muslims, and immigrants.”
She is right. This ridiculousness needs to stop. Trump is spreading hatred.
Back in June, one teacher observed how her students were behaving right before a Trump rally came to town. She mentioned that the children were saying things like:
“You’ll get deported.”
A survey of schools across the country found that these kind of incidents are happening all over the country.
Maureen Costello, who authored this survey, said:
“We mapped it out. There was no state or region that jumped out. It was everywhere. Marginalized students are feeling very frightened, especially Muslims and Mexicans. Many teachers use the word terrified. The children who did the taunting were echoing Trump’s rhetoric. Bad behavior has been normalized. They think it’s OK.”
What does Donald Trump think about all of this bullying? He just said:
“Get over it.”
Now, this survey is not completely scientific. The “Trump Effect” theory is based on anecdotal evidence. These stories show that this type of behavior is occurring in schools. We need to stop all bullying, not just the Trump-related ones.
