Sadly, John Oliver’s show, Last Week Tonight, is about to go on hiatus for a month. Oliver is urging the Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, to drop out and be a hero. Trump’s candidacy is “the equivalent of a bigoted clown’s funeral pyre.”
On Trump’s options, John Oliver said:
“It seems that you have two really bad options here. If you keep going, you’re going to spend the next 11 weeks ramping up hatred in speeches, injecting poison into the American bloodstream that will take generations to remove, and denying the country the contest of ideas that the presidential campaign should actually be.”
Oliver also said:
“Drop out and admit your entire candidacy was a stunt — a satire to expose the flaws in the system.”
“…Think how triumphant it would feel to say on national television, ‘I openly ran on a platform of impossibly ignorant proposals, steeped in bigotry, and nobody stopped me for it. What the fuck is that about?’”
“If you drop out to teach America a lesson, you would not be a loser — you would be a hero. There would be a federal holiday in your name!”
He compared Donald Trump’s campaign to a book called “The Kid Who Ran For President”. Oliver thinks Trump should use the book to come up with his speech if he were to drop out of the race:
“I have a question for all the grown-ups of America. Are you out of your minds? Are you expecting me to enforce the Constitution? I never even read it. I was out of school that day.”
“America must be in pretty bad shape if you elected me president. You better get it together and find some qualified people to run this country, or we’ll all be in big trouble!”
If Trump were to drop out, Oliver thinks that The Donald will be a legend.
