Not that this breaking story should come as a surprise but, John Lott, known as the NRA’s favorite gun academic, has been found to be a complete and total fraud.
John Lott was adopted as the voice for pro-gun advocates such as the NRA after the tragic 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. However, Lott had been parading himself around as an “academic” for much longer than that.
Investigators uncovered several different instances of fraudulent behavior by Lott shortly after Taylor Woolrich’s frightening story of stalking and her fight to carry a gun on her college campus.
Lott became good friends with Woolrich after she joined Students for Concealed Carry and began pushing Woolrich towards speaking out, but in the way he deemed fit, which did not match with what Woolrich was trying to accomplish. When discussing their relationship and her push for victim advocacy while his interests were the gun laws she stated:
“I think his first priority was his cause. He saw me as a really great asset.”
Coercing Woolrich into allowing him to write articles from her point of view but including little to no actual recounts of her stalking case was not Lott’s first time publishing false evidence for his pro-gun case. In the early 2000’s Lott admitted to posing as the fan, Mary Rush, to defend himself from critics and offer praise to support his character.
He also was called out for claiming to have published peer-reviewed articles in The Econ Journal Watch where he completely misconstrued documented academic research to push his agenda. In reality, the items were rejected from publication.
For someone who has spoken at schools such as Yale, you would think using the title ‘academic’ would allow him sufficient tools to read a chart correctly and correct the fact that his article was never actually published in a renowned journal.
Just more lies for the Republican party and the pro-gun activists who are obviously at a point of desperation in an attempt to sway the public against safer gun laws. With Trump running alongside these groups, it is not a surprise there are so many lies surfacing.
