The damage done by cyberintrusion into the Democratic Party is growing. The hacker known as “Guccifer 2.0” has now released the emails and cell phone numbers of many prominent House Democrats on his WordPress page. The released data also includes contact information for aides and staff members of the DNC, as well as internal campaign analysis of Florida and Colorado congressional candidates.
This release of information reveals that the damage done in the Democratic cybersecurity breach was even greater than initially thought. The leak of emails through the website Wikileaks immediately before the Democratic National Convention nearly derailed the convention and cost Debbie Wasserman Schultz her job as chairwoman of the DNC. The extent of that hack is still unknown, although Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, claims that there are many more hacked items to release on the subject of the Democratic Party that could hurt Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
The identity of Guccifer 2.0 is still unknown, although he claims to be Romanian. However, evidence seems to indicate that he is Russian. This would make much more sense, as Russia seems to prefer Donald Trump get elected over Hillary Clinton. Trump even “jokingly” called for Russia to continue to hack the Clinton campaign. Whoever Guccifer 2.0 is, it seems obvious that a foreign power is trying to influence the United States election. On the blog post containing this newest information, Guccifer 2.0 released this statement:
“It’s time for new revelations now. All of you may have heard about the DCCC hack. As you see I wasn’t wasting my time! It was even easier than in the case of the DNC breach.”
Democrats (and many anti-Trump Republicans) surely cannot wait for this hacked information to stop. Judging from the comments of Assange and Guccifer, along with the size of the data breach, it would seem that this is only the beginning.
