Last week was the Democratic National Convention. Hillary Clinton officially accepted the Democratic nomination. There were many speakers there praising Mrs. Clinton and the work she has done. One particularly powerful speech came from the father of a Muslim soldier killed in Iraq. Khizr Khan very politely tore Trump a new one on that stage.
Someone has written an open letter to this man. I found it reprinted on Fox News’ website, but it originally appeared on the website, US Defense Watch, and was written by Ray Starmann. The letter is a well-written, respectful rebuttal of Mr. Khan’s speech.
He starts out by acknowledging the Khans’ loss of their son, Captain Humayun Khan. He talks of the sacrifice they have made, and he said he “understands the pain” that they go through. Starmann is a veteran of the Golf War, so he knows about that.
Starmann used the Khans’ story to point out all of the terrorists. He went back to the popular right-wing talking point of banning “Sharia law.” It’s funny that they are freaking out over Muslims making laws, but the conservatives want to make us a Christian theocracy.
Starmann acknowledges that the Khans have come here and “assimilated” to our culture. He then proceeded to call Khan’s religion violent just like all Republicans have been doing for years.
Then, he proceeds to point out that the Khans are attacking Trump. He points out that Muslim groups ISIS and Al-Qaeda have done bad things. We all know that, but the Khans are not a part of those groups.
Yes, terrorism is bad. However, not everyone in that religion is a terrorist. It’s funny that a conservative would insult a Muslim since the Christian Religious Right are such a huge, vocal group here. There has been plenty of Christian terrorism over the years.
Starmann must have put on his tinfoil hat at the halfway point of the letter. He rants about “Muslim zombies” wanting to “devour” our country. Starmann goes on to talk about how liberals are “living in a dream world.” That seems to be a popular Fox News term; they act like liberals are delusional or something.
Next, he says that the Khans attacked Donald Trump who has horrible views about the way he wants to treat Muslims in this country. Apparently, Trump is the victim of these people who have lost their son. The Donald is allowed because:
“You attacked Mr. Trump in front of a worldwide audience, yet you can’t understand the fact that he defends himself against attacks from you, Hillary Clinton and the left. What else is one to do sir?”
How can he say he “understands” their pain when he accuses them of attacking Drumpf? Another friend of the Donald has called Mr. Khan and his wife traitors. These people came to America; they sacrificed their child in service to the country. They are by far not traitors!
