FBI: Hackers Go After Democratic Party DONORS With Fake Fundraising Site (VIDEO)

Reuters reports that investigations are underway in regards to the latest Democratic Party hack. This recent cyber attack targeted the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and its donors, a group that raises money for Democratic candidates running for the U.S. House of Representatives.

The incident is separate from the previous Democratic National Committee’s “DNC Leak” matter, and took place between June 19 and June 27.

The FBI is now looking into the potential breach to determine what happened.

What Happened?

According to Reuters, the breach involved the use of a spoof website. This site closely resembled the actual DCCC website used to collect donations, and may have been used to collect data associated with party donors.

Officials do not yet know what information the hackers compromised, though. While finding out what was obtained through the attack will remain a focus, who obtained it is the more pressing question on many minds.

Some in the Democratic camp suspect Donald Trump, with the aid of Russia, is to blame.

The Culprit

Russia has been accused of numerous affronts of late. Their list of misdeeds includes the DNC leak, in which they obtained DNC emails that were released late last week, controlling WikiLeaks from behind the scenes, and secretly aiding Republican nominee Donald Trump by attempting to meddle with the outcome of the presidential election.

It’s an easy conclusion to draw, if you take a look at the usual suspects that get trotted out every time something nefarious happens. It should be noted, however, that such a conclusion is currently based on a cursory examination of the facts.

There is not yet definitive proof that any of these claims are without a doubt true. Perhaps some caution with pointing fingers is warranted?

The Evidence

Sure, it’s being hyped as “Russia did it,” but the information pointing to them has only been circumstantial to date. A Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, denied any involvement.

Officials say that the IP address belonging to the fake site used in this incident resembled one used by hackers linked to the Russian government. These same hackers are believed to be responsible for the earlier DNC email leak.

That in itself is hardly overwhelming evidence.

Even officials investigating the case are reserving judgement until more reliable proof is discovered.

This isn’t to say that the entirety of the Russian government are perfect little angels (the timing is suspiciously coincidental). There’s certainly the possibility that they are attempting to manipulate events in a shadowy, global puppet-master fashion.

Until more information is made available, and the proof is solid, it might be prudent to not to go too deep with any accusations.
